VP Witbooi Hails Omagongo Festival as a Pillar of National Unity and Cultural Heritage

WINDHOEK – Vice President Lucia Witbooi has highlighted the Omagongo Cultural Festival as a vital pillar for the preservation of Namibia’s heritage, unity, and traditional values.

Speaking during a fundraising gala dinner held in Windhoek on Saturday to mobilize resources for the 2026 edition of the festival, Witbooi noted that the annual gathering transcends the mere enjoyment of the traditional marula fruit drink.

The Vice President further explained that the festival is a unique symbol of cultural endurance, reflecting the values of hospitality and collective identity that define the Namibian people. She noted that while the event is widely recognized for the processing and sharing of the marula beverage known as Omagongo in the Oshiwambo language its deeper significance lies in its role as a guardian of national memory.

Witbooi stressed that the fundraising efforts are necessary to maintain the integrity of these traditions, which have received international recognition for their contribution to the intangible cultural history of humanity.

As preparations reach their final stages, the festival is expected to draw thousands of attendees from across the country to celebrate the rich cultural tapestry of the region.
