The repatriation takes place amid growing anti-immigrant sentiments in parts of South Africa, where protests have targeted undocumented foreign nationals. Demonstrators have raised concerns over pressure on public services, employment opportunities, and crime, with foreign nationals often becoming the focus of these tensions.

The Ministry has not provided details on the circumstances of the 72 Namibians, including whether they were undocumented or voluntarily requested assistance to return home.
