A man aged 27 has been taken into police custody after a deadly hit-and-run incident on Hosea Kutako Drive during the early hours of Thursday, which left an unidentified pedestrian dead.

Namibian Police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi said the tragedy unfolded at approximately 01:21 when a silver Audi A4 allegedly struck a pedestrian, killing him on the spot. Moments later, another vehicle reportedly drove over the victim’s body before both motorists fled without stopping to check on the situation.

Shikwambi confirmed that the Audi driver was later located and arrested by officers conducting patrols behind the Hakahana Service Station in Katutura. An alcohol breath test revealed a reading of 0.18, and the suspect, who holds a valid C1 driver’s licence, was immediately detained.

The victim has been described as an adult male, but his identity has not yet been established. Police said efforts are underway to trace and inform the deceased’s next of kin.

In a related incident at the same location, a Toyota Passo driver reportedly stopped abruptly to avoid driving over the body. A silver Honda taxi travelling behind then crashed into the stationary vehicle. Both drivers allegedly abandoned their vehicles and fled the scene.

Police investigations into all aspects of the incident are ongoing.
