Former Agriculture Minister Mac-Albert Hengari is seeking N$10 million in compensation from the government, claiming his arrest and detention last year were unlawful.

Through his legal representatives, Hengari has formally notified authorities of his intention to sue if the demanded amount is not settled within 30 days. The claim relates to his arrest in April 2025, which his lawyers argue was carried out without a warrant.

According to a letter dated 20 March 2026 and addressed to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, Hengari was arrested on or about 26 April 2025. He remained behind bars for more than three months before being granted bail and released on 7 August 2025.

In the correspondence, his legal team indicates that it has been instructed to institute legal proceedings against the Minister of Home Affairs, the Inspector General of the Namibian Police, and other officers allegedly involved in the arrest and detention.

Hengari contends that the arrest and subsequent incarceration violated his rights and caused significant personal and reputational harm. The government has not yet publicly responded to the compensation demand.

Should the matter proceed to court, it could result in a high-profile legal battle involving senior government officials and law enforcement authorities.
