Urban and Rural Development Minister, Hon. Sankwasa James Sankwasa, has directed the Rundu Town Council to strictly comply with legal requirements governing land allocation, stressing that all land allocations must receive ministerial approval before they can be finalised.

The directive was issued during a meeting held on Monday between the Minister and the Rundu Town Council to discuss challenges related to land administration in the town.

Hon. Sankwasa said adherence to the law is essential to ensure transparency, fairness, and accountability in the allocation of land. He urged council officials to follow all prescribed legal procedures and avoid actions that could undermine public confidence in the land administration system.

The Minister also raised concerns over cases of double land allocation, calling on the Council to thoroughly verify all relevant records and documentation before allocating land. He said proper verification would help establish the facts and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Beyond land administration, Hon. Sankwasa encouraged the Council to intensify efforts to keep Rundu clean by introducing town-cleaning programmes that involve unemployed residents. He noted that such initiatives would improve the town’s environment while providing temporary employment opportunities for members of the community.

The Minister further reminded the Council of the importance of maintaining up-to-date audit records. He warned that compliance with audit requirements is non-negotiable and indicated that he would not approve the Council’s budget if outstanding audits are not brought up to date.
