More Than 80 Buffaloes Drown in Chobe River

The Zambezi Region has once again witnessed a tragic wildlife stampede, marking the third mass buffalo death in five years. On Tuesday morning, about 90 buffaloes were found dead near Kavimba village in the Kabulabula Conservancy after trampling each other while fleeing from lions. Similar incidents occurred in 2019 and 2023, raising concerns over recurring wildlife fatalities in the area.
In a related occurrence, more than 80 buffaloes drowned in the Chobe River on Monday evening after being chased by a pride of lions from Botswana into Namibia. The animals reportedly fell from a steep cliff into the river at Serondela, where many perished after tumbling over each other in the water.
The Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism has confirmed both incidents. Ministry spokesperson Ndeshipanda Hamunyela described the deaths as unfortunate but natural events, explaining that the buffaloes were startled by predators and driven into dangerous terrain.
“The ministry and law enforcement officials are on site to maintain order and manage the situation. Carcasses will be distributed to surrounding communities in coordination with regional stakeholders,” Hamunyela said in a statement.
Authorities have also assured the public that measures are in place to protect both wildlife and communities from similar tragedies in the future.
