Muha calls for stronger parliamentary diplomacy to tackle Africa’s challenges
Chairperson of the National Council, Hon. Lukas Muha, says African parliaments must play a stronger role in promoting economic integration, peace and sustainable development if the continent is to achieve the aspirations of Agenda 2063.
Speaking after attending the two-day Annual Conference of Speakers of National and Regional Parliaments at the Pan-African Parliament in Midrand, South Africa, Muha reflected on the conference outcomes and stressed that parliamentary diplomacy remains essential in addressing Africa’s shared challenges.
The conference was held under the theme, “The Role of Parliamentary Diplomacy in Strengthening Relations with National and Regional Parliaments and Contributing to the Achievement of the Objectives of Agenda 2063.”
Muha said Africa possesses enormous natural resources but continues to export raw materials while importing finished products. He argued that the continent should focus on processing its own resources to create jobs, add value to local economies and improve the livelihoods of its citizens.
He identified youth unemployment as one of Africa’s most pressing challenges, saying governments and parliaments must work together to develop practical solutions that create employment opportunities for young people.
Muha also highlighted food security and the rising cost of living as major concerns affecting many African countries. He said these issues require coordinated action through stronger cooperation between African legislatures.
The National Council chairperson further encouraged African countries to make greater use of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), describing it as a key mechanism for boosting intra-African trade, economic growth and regional integration.
He noted that despite the continent’s vast potential, a significant share of Africa’s trade is still conducted with countries outside the continent, demonstrating the need to strengthen trade among African nations.
Muha said peace, stability and good governance remain fundamental to achieving sustainable development and urged parliamentarians to continue working together to advance the objectives of Agenda 2063.
He concluded that stronger parliamentary cooperation will help African countries develop common solutions to shared challenges and accelerate the continent’s integration and development.
