Rundu Town Council Introduces Tough Measures to Recover Municipal Debt From Residents

The Rundu Town Council has announced stricter measures aimed at recovering outstanding municipal debts from residents, with the new rules set to take effect on 1 April 2026.
In a statement issued last week, the council said residents who owe money to the municipality will be required to enter into formal payment arrangements to settle their arrears. This requirement will apply in addition to the existing 70:30 prepaid water system, where 70% of every water purchase is allocated to consumption while the remaining 30% goes toward reducing outstanding debt.
According to the council, the current system on its own has not been sufficient to clear long-standing municipal arrears, prompting the decision to introduce stricter recovery measures.
Residents who fail to make the required payment arrangements risk water restrictions or the suspension of municipal services.
The council has urged affected residents to visit the Debtors Section at Office A9 before the 1 April deadline to arrange payment plans and avoid service disruptions.
