FIFA Stands Firm on Balogun Red Card Decision as Belgium Appeal is Rejected
FIFA has firmly upheld its disciplinary ruling regarding the red card issued to US forward Folarin Balogun, confirming that Belgium’s appeal against the decision has been officially rejected, bringing further clarity to one of the tournament’s most debated incidents.
The governing body’s position reinforces that the original match decision will stand, despite continued objections from the Belgian Football Federation, which had challenged both the dismissal and the subsequent eligibility concerns surrounding the player.
Although the appeal has been dismissed, reports indicate Belgium remains dissatisfied and has informed US Soccer that it may pursue further action after the match if Balogun is included in the lineup.
The controversy intensified following earlier political attention linked to the incident, including comments and involvement from US President Donald Trump, which added global scrutiny to the case and placed additional pressure on FIFA’s disciplinary system.
In response, FIFA President Gianni Infantino reiterated the organisation’s commitment to maintaining strict independence in its judicial processes, stressing that decisions are made without external influence.
“FIFA’s judicial bodies are independent. Their independence is essential to the credibility and integrity of football, and it must always be respected,” Infantino stated.
He further clarified that while discussions with political leaders do occur, including communication with President Trump, such conversations do not affect ongoing disciplinary procedures.
“Yes, I regularly speak with the President of the United States about World Cup matters, and I did receive a call from President Donald Trump. During our conversation, I explained that an official judicial process involving FIFA’s independent judicial bodies was underway, and that the case would be decided in due course by the competent authorities,” he said.
Infantino also acknowledged that FIFA rulings can sometimes be controversial but insisted that respect for the disciplinary process remains essential.
“I read the decisions of FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee when they are published. Sometimes they surprise me. Sometimes I agree with them, and sometimes I disagree. What I always do, however, is respect those decisions and the independence of the bodies that make them,” he added.
With the appeal now closed, FIFA has made it clear that the red card decision stands, while Belgium’s continued dissatisfaction signals potential further legal or procedural steps ahead of their next fixtures.
