Lionel Messi Announces His Retirement from the Argentina National Team
Lionel Messi has officially ended his time with the Argentina national team, bringing down the curtain on a remarkable 21-year international career that saw him overcome years of disappointment before becoming a World Cup champion.
The 39-year-old announced his decision on Monday, August 31, confirming that he will no longer represent Argentina at international level. Messi said the decision was difficult, but he believes the time has come to step away and give younger players an opportunity to take the team forward.
Messi’s final appearance for Argentina came in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final against Spain. Argentina lost the match 1-0, ending their hopes of successfully defending the World Cup title they won in Qatar four years earlier.
Despite the disappointing ending, Messi leaves the national team with a record that places him among Argentina’s greatest-ever footballers. He finished his international career with 207 appearances and 125 goals, making him both the country’s most-capped player and its all-time leading scorer.
His journey with the senior national team began in 2005. The early years were filled with frustration, including defeats in the 2014 World Cup final and Copa América finals, as Argentina struggled to win a major trophy with its star player.
Messi helped Argentina win the Copa América in 2021 before leading the country to glory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He later added another Copa América title in 2024, transforming his international legacy after years of criticism.
The 2026 World Cup provided one final chapter. Messi scored eight goals during the tournament and guided Argentina back to the final, although Spain ultimately prevented him from ending his international career with another World Cup medal.
Messi revealed that he had already written his retirement message shortly after the World Cup final. The recent death of his father, Jorge Messi, further strengthened his decision to leave international football behind.
His retirement from Argentina does not mean the end of his playing career. Messi remains with Inter Miami and is expected to continue playing club football in Major League Soccer.
