In this exclusive interview with The Updated World, we speak to Daniel Kavanga, a goalkeeper from Korokoko in the Kavango East Region of Namibia, now playing for Ntunguru Football Club in the North East First Division.
Known for his confidence, leadership, and even goal-scoring ability from set pieces, Daniel shares his journey from childhood football in his village to competitive regional football, along with his challenges, achievements, and dreams for the future.
Introduction
1. Tell us about yourself and where you come from.
My name is Daniel Kavanga, a football player. I come from Korokoko in the Kavango East Region of Namibia. I love football, and when I am on the field I feel peace.
2. When did you start playing football?
I started playing football at a very young age, around 5 years old.
3. Which team are you currently playing for?
I am currently playing for Ntunguru Football Club in the North East First Division.
4. What position do you play?
I am a goalkeeper.
5. Who inspired you to become a footballer?
My biggest inspiration was my older brother. I used to follow him to the field and watch him play. When I was 11, I told him I would become even better than him in football.
Football Journey
6. How did your football journey begin?
I started playing with my friends at home. We played from morning until afternoon without getting tired. Football became part of our daily life.
7. Which clubs or teams have you played for previously?
I started at Coco team, then moved to Mazana where I trained briefly before a tournament. I also played for Sunrise, where I helped the team reach the final and saved four penalties in a shootout. Later I joined Ndinoveshi in the 3rd Division, and from there I moved to Ntunguru FC in the 2023/2024 season.
8. What challenges have you faced in your football career?
As a goalkeeper, I faced challenges like not having proper gloves and boots. I also had to deal with negative comments from people.
9. What has been your biggest achievement in football so far? My biggest achievement is moving directly from the 3rd Division to the First Division.
10. Describe your best match or performance.
My best match was during the Gatto Tournament at John Mutorwa Sports Field against Kangweru Black Tops FC in the final. Even though we lost, it was a great experience for me.
Current Season
11. How would you describe your team’s current season?
This season was difficult for Ntunguru FC. Some key players left, and the team struggled. But I worked hard and helped the team move out of the relegation zone.
12. What are the team’s goals this season?
To improve performance and strengthen the squad to compete better in the league.
13. Which match this season stands out for you the most?
The match against UNAM FC. I scored two free kicks in that game, which was unbelievable for me and my supporters.

14. How is the relationship among players within the squad?
We have a very good relationship. I am friendly with everyone and I like making jokes that keep the team happy.
15. What areas do you think the team needs to improve on?
We need to improve our attacking strength and bring in more quality forward players.

16. What motivates you to keep improving as a player?
I always tell myself that I will make it in football and make my family and supporters proud.
17. How do you prepare before matches?
I prepare mentally, warm up properly, and focus on my game plan before each match.
18. What skills are you currently working on?
I am working hard to improve my skills and become a better all-round goalkeeper.
19. Which football player do you admire the most, and why?
I admire Sánchez, the Chelsea goalkeeper, because of his distribution and ability to assist in attacks.
20. What important advice do coaches usually give you?
My coach always tells me not to take any match lightly and to stay focused and alert.

The fans are very important. They support us and help us improve when we make mistakes.
22. What message would you like to share with your supporters?
I love my supporters. Without them I would not achieve anything. I appreciate everything they have done for my career.
23. How does football help young people in your community?
Football keeps young people away from bad habits like stealing and drug use.
24. Do you participate in community activities outside football?
Yes, I am also a church youth member when I am home.

25. What are your future goals in football?
I want to make history in football and achieve great things in my career.
26. Do you dream of playing professionally or internationally?
Yes, my dream is to play international football one day.
27. Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
I see myself playing in South Africa with my family, if God allows it.
28. What advice would you give to upcoming young players?
Stay positive, be patient, and understand that success takes time. Do not rush focus and work hard.
