Sponsor Talks On Mute For Now, Government To Secure Funds For The League
The Namibian government is set to secure funding from State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) to support football leagues across the country, a development that could help pave the way for the return of domestic league football.
Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare said the Ministers of Works and Transport, Information and Communication Technology, and Finance are expected to announce the funding in the coming days.
The announcement comes after the start of the domestic football season was delayed, with reports previously indicating that the Namibia Football Association (NFA) had been in talks with a potential sponsor regarding financial support for the league.
However, no positive outcome from those reported sponsorship discussions has been publicly confirmed so far, leaving the financial position of the leagues uncertain.
The latest government intervention could now provide an alternative source of funding, with SOEs expected to contribute towards the running of leagues across the country.
According to Ngurare, the funding initiative is expected to support employment opportunities for more than 20,000 people connected to football, citing figures from the NFA.
The planned funding is expected to cover football leagues across the country rather than focusing only on the top division, potentially providing support throughout Namibia’s football structures.
Sam Nujoma Stadium Funding Secured
Meanwhile, Ngurare has confirmed that the financial shortfall required for the revamp of Sam Nujoma Stadium has been secured.
Ngurare said the government had previously promised to secure the outstanding funds needed for the stadium project and has now fulfilled that commitment.
Sam Nujoma Stadium is one of Namibia’s major football venues, and its revamp is expected to improve the infrastructure available for domestic football and major matches.
Further details on the funding for the country’s football leagues are expected when the relevant ministries make their announcement in the coming days.
