Traoré Threatens Football Federation Intervention After Burkina Faso’s 7-0 Defeat

Burkina Faso could face a major shake-up in football administration after President Ibrahim Traoré criticised the country’s football system following the national team’s heavy 7-0 defeat to Argentina.
Traoré described the country’s football as “sick” and called for urgent reforms, raising concerns about possible government intervention in the affairs of the Burkina Faso Football Federation (FBF).
The defeat came after serious travel and organisational problems disrupted Burkina Faso’s preparations for the international friendly in Buenos Aires. The senior team’s planned trip was affected by the cancellation of its charter flight, forcing the country to rely on an emergency squad largely made up of under-23 players.
Argentina went on to win 7-0 on 1 October 2026, exposing the difficult circumstances surrounding Burkina Faso’s participation in the match.
Speaking after the incident, Traoré praised the young players for travelling under difficult conditions but indicated that changes were needed to prevent similar failures in the future.
Reports have also raised concerns about the possibility of establishing a state-backed 20-team competition known as the “Sovereignty League”.
