Police in Katima Mulilo have launched an investigation into an alleged extortion incident after a 37-year-old court orderly was taken into custody on Tuesday.

According to authorities, the suspect is accused of threatening a victim and demanding N$1,000, allegedly warning that the victim’s son would “rot in prison” if the money was not paid. The amount was reportedly handed over but was later recovered by the police.

The accused, identified as Eric Simataa, made his first court appearance before Magistrate Laina Namboga in the Katima Mulilo Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday morning. The State opposed his release on bail, arguing that the charge is serious and raising concerns about possible interference with witnesses.

The matter was initially postponed to 16 April 2026. However, the date was reconsidered after Simataa informed the court that he is employed as a civil servant under the Ministry of Safety and Security’s police department and could face dismissal if he remains absent from work for 30 days.

The case has now been postponed to Thursday for the hearing of a formal bail application.
