Crime scene report

Two men were arrested on Monday following a failed armed robbery at a residence on Theo Ben Gurirab Street in Walvis Bay. The robbery attempt occurred shortly after the homeowner left for work, when the suspects tried to break into the house by disconnecting the electric gate and threatening a domestic worker.

According to Senior Inspector Judith Shomongula of the Erongo Police, a vigilant neighbour noticed the suspicious activity and immediately contacted the police. Officers responded swiftly and apprehended two of the suspects on the scene, recovering an unlicensed 9mm P38 pistol from one of them.

Further investigations revealed that the pistol’s serial number had been tampered with and the black Kia Rio used as a getaway vehicle had fake number plates. The driver of the vehicle initially escaped but the car was later found abandoned near Johanna Benson Street in the Tutaleni area of Kuisebmond.

Nothing was stolen during the incident. The arrested suspects, Paulus Shaanika (35) and Matheus Jonas (28), appeared in Walvis Bay Magistrate Court where bail was denied. Their case has been postponed to 2 June 2026. They face charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and using false number plates.
