Keetmanshoop Man Jailed for Raping Elderly Woman

A 52-year-old Keetmanshoop resident has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted of raping a 60 year old woman at her home more than a decade ago.Johannes Sifoleni was found guilty of attacking the woman while she was asleep on the veranda of her Keetmanshoop residence in 2015.
He denied the charge throughout the trial, which commenced in July 2020, and chose not to testify in his defence.During sentencing, the defence argued for leniency, telling the court that Sifoleni is a first-time offender, a father of five and the family’s breadwinner.
His lawyer also submitted that he had been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the offence and had already spent eight months in pretrial detention, proposing a partially suspended sentence. The prosecution opposed a lighter sentence, describing rape as a serious offence and pointing to medical evidence showing injuries to the victim’s neck, suggesting she had struggled during the attack.
The State sought a 15-year prison sentence. In delivering judgment, Magistrate Frans Anderson acknowledged Sifoleni’s personal circumstances but said they were outweighed by the gravity of the offence and the need to protect vulnerable members of society. The court ultimately imposed a direct prison sentence of 10 years, finding that imprisonment was the appropriate punishment given the seriousness of the crime.
