Walvis Bay Authorities Urge Calm as HFMD Cases Reported in Schools
Walvis Bay Mayor Johannes Shimbilinga has called for calm following the outbreak of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) in some local schools, assuring residents that health authorities are actively monitoring the situation.
The Mayor convened an urgent meeting with officials from the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) and the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture (MoEIYSAC) to address growing public concern and ensure coordinated communication with the community.
Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Boois of the Ministry of Health clarified that HFMD is a common viral infection affecting humans and should not be confused with foot-and-mouth disease, which affects livestock.
He explained that the illness usually begins with flu-like symptoms before developing blisters or a rash on the hands, feet and inside the mouth.
According to the Ministry, HFMD is generally mild, with most patients recovering within seven days through rest, adequate hydration and treatment to relieve symptoms.
Health officials said they are investigating confirmed cases, conducting visits to affected schools and working with healthcare providers to limit the spread of the virus.
Parents have been encouraged to remain vigilant by ensuring regular handwashing with soap and water, disinfecting frequently touched surfaces and keeping children with symptoms at home until they have fully recovered.
The Municipality said the meeting was intended to reassure the public and promote accurate information as authorities continue to respond to the outbreak.
Residents have also been urged to avoid spreading misinformation and to follow advice issued by health officials.
The outbreak has raised concern among parents, but authorities maintain that there is no cause for panic as measures are being implemented to protect learners and prevent further transmission.
