Fake Payment SMS Scam Leaves Klein Windhoek Teen Without N$11 000 Gaming Equipment

A 19-year-old man from Klein Windhoek was allegedly tricked into handing over gaming equipment valued at about N$11 000 after falling victim to an online purchase scam involving a fraudulent payment notification.
According to reports, the suspect posed as a genuine buyer and sent the victim a fake Bank Windhoek payment SMS as proof of payment. Believing the transaction was successful, the victim released the gaming equipment.
The suspect reportedly arranged for a Yango driver to collect the items, but the victim later discovered that no money had been deposited and that the payment confirmation was fake.
Authorities continue to warn members of the public to verify payments directly through their banking platforms before handing over goods to online buyers.
