African passports continue to vary significantly in global travel freedom, with island nations leading the continent in visa-free access, according to the 2026 Henley Passport Index.
The rankings are based on the number of destinations passport holders can visit without obtaining a visa in advance, including visa-free, visa-on-arrival and electronic travel authorisation (eTA) access.

- Seychelles – 155 destinations
- Mauritius – 148 destinations
- South Africa – 101 destinations
- Botswana – 82 destinations
- Namibia – 75 destinations
- Lesotho – 74 destinations
- Eswatini – 72 destinations
- Malawi (tied) – 71 destinations
- Morocco (tied) – 71 destinations
- Kenya – 70 destinations
- Rwanda (tied) – 69 destinations
- Tanzania (tied) – 69 destinations
Namibia ranks as the fifth strongest passport in Africa, giving its citizens visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 75 destinations worldwide. The ranking reflects the country’s growing international mobility and diplomatic relations.
Beyond its passport strength, Namibia is internationally recognised as one of Africa’s leading tourism destinations.
The country is home to iconic attractions such as the towering red dunes of Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert, the wildlife-rich Etosha National Park, the dramatic coastline of Swakopmund, the rugged landscapes of Damaraland, and the spectacular Fish River Canyon, one of the largest canyons in the world.
Namibia is also celebrated for its rich cultural heritage, conservation efforts, and dark-sky stargazing experiences, attracting thousands of visitors from around the globe each year.
The Henley Passport Index ranks passports using official data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and is updated regularly to reflect changes in global visa policies.
