Tanzania, ARIPO Strengthen Cooperation on Intellectual Property

The African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) has reaffirmed the importance of continued engagement with its member states and diplomatic representatives in strengthening regional cooperation on intellectual property matters.

ARIPO Director General Bemanya Twebaze recently welcomed Her Excellency CP Suzan S. Kaganda, Ambassador of the United Republic of Tanzania to Zimbabwe, to the ARIPO Secretariat.

According to a statement published by ARIPO on its official platforms, the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss Tanzania’s specific priorities and explore areas of cooperation that could deliver value not only for Tanzania, but also for ARIPO member states and the broader African continent.

The organisation said ambassadors of ARIPO member states, across their respective countries of accreditation, remain important partners in sustaining dialogue on intellectual property matters.

The engagement forms part of ARIPO’s efforts to strengthen cooperation and communication with its member states while ensuring that national priorities are considered within the organisation’s broader regional agenda.

The discussions between Twebaze and Ambassador Kaganda focused on identifying areas where Tanzania and ARIPO can work together more closely.

Such cooperation is important as African countries seek to strengthen intellectual property systems and promote innovation, creativity and economic development.

ARIPO is an intergovernmental organisation that promotes cooperation among African countries in intellectual property matters.

It provides a regional framework for cooperation in areas including patents, trademarks, industrial designs, copyright and related rights, and other forms of intellectual property.

The organisation’s engagement with Tanzania also comes as ARIPO commemorates its 50th anniversary in 2026, marking five decades of regional cooperation in intellectual property.

The milestone provides an opportunity for the organisation and its member states to reflect on progress made while strengthening partnerships to address emerging intellectual property challenges across Africa.

ARIPO said the meeting reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating strong regional cooperation through meaningful stakeholder engagement at every level.

The organisation further emphasised that continued dialogue with member states and key stakeholders remains essential to ensuring that intellectual property cooperation contributes to the development of individual countries as well as the wider African continent.
