Fatal Head-On Crash on Kalkfeld–Otjiwarongo Road claim lives of two truck drivers

Truck-related road crashes have claimed 48 lives in Namibia since the start of the year, with more than 200 people injured in incidents recorded up to 16 September.

According to figures from the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund, 112 crashes involving trucks were recorded nationwide during the period, resulting in 211 injuries.

Erongo and Otjozondjupa were among the hardest-hit regions in terms of lives lost. Erongo recorded 15 fatalities from 30 truck-related crashes, while Otjozondjupa reported 14 deaths from 14 crashes. Combined, the two regions accounted for 29 of the country’s 48 fatalities.

Khomas, meanwhile, recorded 21 crashes. Although it had fewer incidents than Erongo, the region registered the highest number of injuries, with 59 people hurt in truck-related crashes.

MVA Fund chief corporate affairs John Haufiku said collisions remained the leading type of truck-related crash during the period under review. The 57 recorded collision incidents resulted in 157 injuries and 37 deaths.

Pedestrian-related incidents also contributed to the death toll. The MVA Fund recorded 24 such crashes, in which 10 people died and 17 others were injured.

The figures cover incidents recorded across Namibia between January and 16 September and show the significant impact truck-related crashes continue to have on road safety.
