Namibia considers request to supply teachers to The Bahamas
Namibia is considering a request from The Bahamas to provide qualified teachers, particularly in mathematics, science and technical subjects, as the Caribbean country looks to address its teaching needs.
The matter was discussed during a meeting between Namibia’s Prime Minister, Dr Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare, and his Bahamian counterpart, Philip Davis, on the sidelines of the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda on Tuesday.
Ngurare said Namibia was willing to consider the request through the relevant institutions. However, any arrangement would depend on the availability of qualified teachers, Namibia’s own staffing needs and the required professional standards.
The two leaders also discussed ways to strengthen trade, tourism and investment between their countries. Namibia welcomed The Bahamas’ interest in diversifying its food imports and exploring opportunities to buy agricultural products from Namibia.
Potential Namibian exports to The Bahamas include beef, table grapes, blueberries, dates and other agricultural products. These would, however, need to meet the necessary health and market-access requirements.
The discussions also covered a planned trade mission to Namibia in March 2027. The delegation is expected to be led by Davis and include Bahamian business representatives interested in exploring investment and commercial opportunities.
Both countries further discussed a proposed memorandum of understanding that would create a framework for regular political and diplomatic consultations.
Ngurare also expressed appreciation to The Bahamas for its historical support for Namibia’s liberation struggle through the United Nations, the Commonwealth and the Non-Aligned Movement.
