A 70-year-old Swakopmund resident is recovering in hospital after he was brutally attacked and stabbed during a home robbery early Sunday morning. The incident has sent shockwaves through the normally quiet coastal town.
According to the Namibian Police’s crime report, the victim was ambushed while switching off his alarm and making coffee in the kitchen part of his usual morning routine. His wife was still asleep when four unknown male suspects stormed into the house and confronted him.
In the course of the robbery, a struggle broke out. The attackers struck the man in the face with an unidentified object before stabbing him in the left side of the chest with a sharp weapon. The assailants were reportedly demanding a gold chain the man used to wear.
After injuring the victim, the robbers proceeded to the bedroom where they stole several items, including wedding rings and a pistol from the home’s firearm safe. They also made off with the victim’s Toyota Hilux bakkie, which was later discovered abandoned in the DRC suburb with its keys still in the ignition.
The stolen items’ total value has not yet been determined, as investigations continue. Meanwhile, the victim was rushed to Cottage Private Hospital, where he is currently in stable condition.
Police are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in tracking down the suspects.
