Concerns regarding the safety and well-being of Namibian athletes have emerged following reports that several young runners competed without appropriate footwear and athletic gear during the 3,000-metre race at the Region 5 Youth Games, held at Vineta Stadium in Swakopmund.

Photographs from the event, which took place on Monday, show athletes running barefoot on the stadium’s newly resurfaced synthetic track, which is not designed for bare feet and may pose risks of injury.

Social activist Marth Namhadi described the situation as unacceptable, stating that it reflects the socio-economic challenges faced by young athletes. “These are children from underprivileged backgrounds. It is disheartening to see them run barefoot and without proper uniforms in front of a regional audience,” Namhadi said. She added that athletes from the Oshana, Ohangwena, and Omusati regions were particularly affected.

In response, deputy minister of sport, youth and national service, Dino Ballotti, acknowledged the issue and confirmed that the ministry is taking steps to address it.

“While some athletes may prefer to compete barefoot, we recognise that this is not an ideal scenario, especially on synthetic tracks. We are working closely with coaches to ensure that all athletes are provided with the necessary equipment,” Ballotti stated.

The ministry also emphasised its commitment to improving support for athletes from disadvantaged backgrounds to prevent similar incidents in the future.
