A 64-year-old woman has been left devastated after losing more than N$25 000 in an alleged ATM fraud scheme at Gwashamba Mall on Friday morning.
According to police reports, the incident happened around 11h30 at an FNB automated teller machine. The victim was approached via a phone call from an unknown person who allegedly posed as an employee of the Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA).
The caller convinced the woman that she was due to receive a deposit of N$18 500 into her account and persuaded her to share her ATM card details. Shortly after providing the information, she received a bank notification that N$25 450 had been withdrawn from her account.
Police spokespersons confirmed that no suspects have been arrested and the stolen money has not yet been recovered. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
Authorities have once again urged the public to remain vigilant against scammers who exploit unsuspecting citizens, especially pensioners, by posing as officials from reputable institutions.
