Three Arrested in Oshikoto Over Voter Registration Fraud

Police in the Oshikoto Region have arrested three individuals in connection with a fraudulent voter registration attempt at Casablanca village over the weekend.

According to police reports, a 41-year-old man allegedly tried to register as a voter using a stolen birth certificate. He was accompanied by two men, aged 28 and 37, who acted as his witnesses during the registration process.

The trio’s scheme came to light when Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) officials discovered that the details provided during the registration matched an existing voter already registered in Rundu. This prompted immediate police intervention, leading to the arrests on Saturday afternoon.

In a related incident, police in Erongo are probing another suspected voter registration scam after the identity document of a 33-year-old ECN supervisor from Keetmanshoop was reportedly used in Walvis Bay. Authorities suspect that the document was fraudulently used by a foreign national, not only to obtain a voter’s card but also to secure employment in Namibia.

The suspect in the Erongo case has been identified, but no arrest has yet been made.

The ECN is currently engaged in supplementary voter registration ahead of the regional and local authority elections scheduled for November. Law enforcement agencies have since urged the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspected electoral fraud.
