An alleged scammer died on Tuesday after being assaulted by community members in Ndama, Rundu, Kavango East Region.
According to information received, the man reportedly attempted to defraud a woman of N$700 by claiming it was payment for a bale of goods she had allegedly ordered from Oshikango. The woman denied placing any such order but pretended to comply and arranged for the suspect to collect the money in person.
When the man arrived, community members confronted him, apprehended him, and subjected him to mob justice before escorting him to the Ndama Police Station.
Police officers later inspected the suspect’s cellphone, where they allegedly found evidence of another scam involving N$300. The victim in that case was contacted, and the suspect reportedly agreed to refund them.
While at the station, the suspect began complaining of weakness and later vomited after being given water. Officers rushed him to Rundu State Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
The man’s death has raised concerns over rising cases of mob justice, with police warning the public against taking the law into their own hands.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
