
A 70-year-old man is recovering in hospital after being violently assaulted and robbed while walking home from the Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair.
The victim, a resident of Erf 3592 in Valombola, was attacked near a dumpsite by a group of about five unidentified men. According to the police, the incident occurred as the elderly man was making his way home from the fair.
Reports indicate that the suspects approached the man from behind. One allegedly kicked him on the right leg, causing him to fall. The group then launched a brutal assault, kicking and punching him repeatedly. In a particularly severe blow, one attacker struck the victim’s left eye with a stone, causing a deep cut and heavy bleeding.
After incapacitating the man, the assailants stole N$1,000 in cash and a black Nokia torchlight cellphone valued at N$800, bringing the total loss to N$1,800.
The victim was rushed to Oshakati Intermediate Hospital, where he is admitted in Ward 2 and reported to be in a stable condition.
Police have opened a case and confirmed that no arrests have been made yet, as the suspects remain unknown. Investigations are ongoing.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant, particularly during and after major public events such as the Ongwediva Trade Fair, and to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
