Two sisters endured a harrowing ordeal last week after being held hostage, threatened with rape and death, and robbed by men posing as an online taxi service driver and passenger.
According to one of the victims, Kamary Mupupa, the incident occurred after they mistakenly entered a vehicle that pretended to be the online taxi they had booked.
“The man in front told the driver he should be dropped off in Windhoek North before us,” Mupupa recalled. “But as we drove, the driver kept pretending to ask for directions. Suddenly, he stopped, and the passenger jumped to the back seat, pulled out a knife, and ordered us to keep quiet.”
The attacker, described as wearing a black jacket and hat, allegedly threatened the women with a kitchen knife, demanding all their belongings, including their phones, wigs, and shopping bags.
“He said, ‘bring everything or I will stab and end both your lives’,” Mupupa said.
The ordeal reportedly lasted nearly an hour, with the suspects driving the sisters around Windhoek North and Rhino Park before finally releasing them. During the attack, the women were allegedly beaten when they told their assailants they had no money.
The traumatised sisters have since reported the matter to the police, who are investigating the case. Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious when using transport services and to always verify driver details before boarding.
Police spokespersons have also warned residents to use only verified ride-hailing platforms and to share trip details with trusted contacts.
