Zimbabwe Face Possible Home-Match Ban After Fan’s Death

Zimbabwe could once again be forced to play their international home matches outside the country following the death of a football supporter during the Warriors’ 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Democratic Republic of Congo in Harare.
The incident occurred at the National Sports Stadium on Monday, 28 September 2026, as supporters were entering the venue for the Group E qualifier. Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed that a person died during a stampede at Gate 2 involving a police public-order vehicle, while investigations were launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The tragedy has raised fresh concerns over crowd management and safety at the National Sports Stadium, with the venue potentially facing renewed scrutiny from African football authorities.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to communicate its position on the use of the stadium for future international matches.
The development would be a major setback for the Warriors, who had only recently returned to playing international football in Harare after spending several years hosting their home matches outside Zimbabwe.
The National Sports Stadium had previously been unavailable for international football after failing to meet required standards, forcing Zimbabwe to use venues outside the country. Its return was therefore seen as an important moment for the national team and local supporters.
The return, however, was overshadowed by the fatal incident during the DR Congo match.
Zimbabwe went on to lose the qualifier 2-1, with DR Congo taking all three points in Harare.
Government authorities have said investigations into the death are continuing, with officials also indicating that crowd-control, access procedures and emergency response measures will be reviewed following the incident.
If CAF imposes restrictions on the stadium, Zimbabwe could once again have to identify an approved venue outside the country for upcoming home fixtures in the AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign.
