King Oyo Nyimba of Western Uganda dies at 34 after three decades on the throne
King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom has died at the age of 34, bringing an end to a remarkable reign that began when he was just three years old.
Oyo became king of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda in 1995 following the death of his father. His accession at the age of three made him the world’s youngest reigning monarch.
The monarch’s death was announced by Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki. Officials said King Oyo died on Thursday evening while receiving medical treatment in the United States. The kingdom has not officially disclosed the cause of death.
Although he became king as a child, Oyo initially exercised his royal duties under the guidance of regents until reaching adulthood. He formally took full responsibility for the kingdom at the age of 18 in 2010.
During his reign, King Oyo became an important cultural figure in Uganda. Traditional kings in the country do not hold constitutional political power, but they continue to play significant roles in preserving culture and supporting social and community initiatives.
Tooro officials have said the royal institution will continue following his death. The late king leaves behind a prince who is identified as an heir, with further details expected to be announced according to the kingdom’s traditions.
King Oyo’s death marks the end of a 31-year journey that began with a three-year-old boy unexpectedly becoming one of the most recognised traditional monarchs in Africa.
