Uganda Election Day: Voting Delays Hit Kampala and Jinja Amid Technical Issues

Voting in Uganda’s presidential and parliamentary elections has been delayed in several parts of the country, particularly in the capital Kampala and the border city of Jinja, nearly two hours after polls were scheduled to open.

Reports from voters and local observers indicate that ballots have not arrived at some polling stations, while biometric voter verification machines are malfunctioning at others. These issues have left many citizens waiting outside polling centers without clear guidance on when voting will begin.

In Kampala, residents described long lines forming as election officials worked to resolve technical problems. One voter in Jinja said that staff were still setting up materials well past the official start time, causing frustration among those hoping to cast their ballots early.

The delays come amid a nationwide internet blackout imposed by the government in the days leading up to the election. Authorities say the measure is meant to curb misinformation, but critics argue that it complicates communication and transparency during the voting process.

President Yoweri Museveni, 81, is seeking another term in office, facing opposition challenges including from popular musician‑turned‑politician Bobi Wine, 43. Officials say election results are expected to be tallied over the next 48 hours, once voting is completed nationwide.
