Viral TikTok Video Lands Three Senegal Creators Behind Bars Over President Faye Remarks

A legal battle involving three popular Senegalese TikTok creators has sparked a wider conversation about social media freedom after they were sentenced to prison over a video authorities said was disrespectful towards President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
Among those convicted was Mandoumbe Diop, better known online as Lamignou Darou, who has attracted more than half a million followers on TikTok. He received a three-month prison sentence, while fellow content creators Magueye Diaw and Moustapha Ndiaye were each handed two months behind bars and fined approximately $800.
The three influencers were accused of producing content that crossed legal boundaries by allegedly insulting the president. However, their lawyer maintained that the video was created for entertainment purposes and formed part of a comedy-style performance rather than an attempt to attack the country’s leader.
