The Electricity Control Board (ECB) of Namibia has approved a 3.8% increase in NamPower’s bulk electricity tariff for the 2025/26 financial year. This means electricity prices will go up from 199 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) to 206 cents per kWh.

The government will provide a subsidy of N$283 million to help reduce the cost for consumers. Without this support, the increase would have been much higher around 7.6%.

Robert Kahimise, the CEO of ECB, said the rise could have been worse if not for the strong performance of the Ruacana power plant. “Thanks to good rains, Ruacana produced more electricity than expected, which helped ease the pressure,” he said.

NamPower had originally asked for a much higher increase of 17.44%, but ECB approved a smaller rise to protect consumers.
