The agreement governing operations at the Katima Mulilo abattoir between Meatco and the Zambezi Meat Corporation has officially come to an end, marking a new phase for stakeholders in the Zambezi Region.

According to Meatco’s Communications Officer, Undamuje Hambira, the Memorandum of Agreement that regulated collaboration between Meatco Northern Communal Area and ZAMCO expired on 15 April 2026, after running for five years since April 2021. In response, both parties have agreed on a Transitional Exit Plan, which will run from 16 April to 30 June 2026, to facilitate a smooth and structured handover of operations.

Hambira explained that during this transition period, Meatco will gradually scale down its activities at the Katima Mulilo abattoir. This process will include verifying inventory, halting cattle procurement, and steadily reducing stock levels. She emphasized that the company will continue to meet all its contractual obligations to producers and suppliers linked to the facility, in line with existing agreements.

She further noted that additional consultations with stakeholders will be announced in due course to keep all parties informed on progress and developments related to the transition.

Meanwhile, Interim Chief Executive Officer Albertus Aochamub highlighted that the transition is being handled with a clear and disciplined approach. He stressed that the immediate priority is to safeguard value for producers, sustain market confidence, and ensure continuity across operations.

Aochamub added that as Meatco pushes forward with its turnaround strategy, the organisation is refining its operational focus and allocating resources to areas with the greatest benefit to Namibia’s livestock industry. He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to its role in stabilising the market and enhancing sustainable market access for local producers.
