Cyberattack Hits Otjiwarongo Municipality, Suspected Data Compromised

The Otjiwarongo Municipality is currently grappling with the aftermath of a cyberattack that may have resulted in sensitive data being stolen and a ransom demanded by the attackers.

The breach was flagged on Tuesday by the Namibia Cyber Security Incident Response Team (NAM-CSIRT), which operates under the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN).

CRAN’s CEO and head of NAM-CSIRT, Emilia Nghikembua, revealed that a cybercriminal group known as “INC Ransom” is suspected to be responsible for the breach.

“In light of the seriousness of the incident, NAM-CSIRT immediately informed the municipality and advised urgent containment actions, such as isolating affected systems and conducting thorough data mapping to determine the scale of the breach,” Nghikembua said.
