The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) will officially commission the country’s first telecommunication network tower funded under the Universal Service Fund (USF) next week. The commissioning ceremony is scheduled for 19 November 2025 in Epinga village, Omundaungilo constituency, Ohangwena Region.
The project forms part of government’s broader strategy to expand digital connectivity to rural and underserved communities. Over the next three years, government has committed N$145 million in seed funding to the USF initiative, which focuses on bridging the digital divide in remote areas.
According to MICT, priority regions under the programme include Kavango West, Kavango East, Kunene, Ohangwena, and Oshikoto. In addition to tower construction, the initiative also identified 16 schools and four clinics that will benefit from uncapped Wi-Fi access.
Epinga village was selected as one of the areas without any previous telecommunication coverage. The newly constructed tower now provides 4G broadband data and voice services to residents and surrounding institutions, including Shimbode Primary School and Epinga Clinic.
The Ministry says improved network access will enhance service delivery, education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for the community as government continues working toward universal access to information and communication services across Namibia.
