FIFA has opened an investigation into claims that American social media star IShowSpeed was subjected to racist abuse during Argentina’s 3–2 victory over Cape Verde at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on 3 July.

The 21‑year‑old influencer, whose real name is Darren Jason Watkins Jr, was livestreaming from the stands while wearing a Cape Verde jersey when he became involved in a confrontation with an Argentina supporter. The footage later appeared on his YouTube channel, where he has more than 57 million subscribers, along with another 53 million followers on TikTok.

FIFA confirmed it was alerted to the incident shortly after the match and said it had immediately initiated an investigation into the matter.

In a statement, the organisation stressed its commitment to protecting the integrity of the World Cup:

The FIFA World Cup is a celebration of unity, diversity and respect. Anyone who acts in a manner that undermines these values is not welcome in our game.”

IShowSpeed has been a visible figure throughout the tournament, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino and former AC Milan and Barcelona striker Zlatan Ibrahimović appearing in some of his livestreams.

The incident comes amid renewed scrutiny over racism in football. Earlier this week, France forward Kylian Mbappé condemned Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla for racist remarks she posted on X following Paraguay’s defeat to France in the last‑16 round. The French Football Federation says it plans to file criminal charges, describing her comments as “abhorrent and unacceptable.”

FIFA’s investigation into the alleged abuse of IShowSpeed is ongoing, with further details expected as officials review footage and statements from those involved.
