Hanghuwo joins continental push for stronger women’s representation at Pan-African Parliament
Namibian parliamentarian Olivia Hanghuwo has joined lawmakers from across Africa in discussions aimed at advancing gender equality and strengthening women’s participation in decision making on the continent.
Hanghuwo took part in the inaugural meeting of the Women Caucus of the Seventh Parliament of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), where members discussed the caucus’ priorities, work programme and strategies to promote women’s empowerment.
The meeting also considered a proposed collaboration framework presented by Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, convener of the Beijing 30+ Africa Women’s Movement, which seeks to establish stronger cooperation between the movement and PAP.
The proposed action plan focuses on areas such as legislative reforms, parliamentary oversight, advocacy and partnerships aimed at addressing challenges affecting women across Africa.
Members resolved that the draft plan will first be reviewed through a joint engagement between the Women Caucus and the Committee on Gender, Family, Youth and People with Disabilities before it is presented for adoption.
Hanghuwo is part of Namibia’s delegation to the Pan-African Parliament, led by Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Phillipus Katamelo. The delegation also includes Alpheus !Naruseb, Tjimutambo Kuuoko and Rodney Cloete, who are participating in committee meetings and the First Ordinary Session of the Seventh Parliament of PAP in Midrand, South Africa.
