Mahama Condemns Recent Xenophobic Attack in South Africa
President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, has strongly condemned the recent xenophobic attack in South Africa, saying the violence has claimed the lives of several African nationals, including Ghanaians and Nigerians.
Mahama said many other African citizens are living in fear, intimidation and uncertainty following the attacks.
He welcomed the decision by the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to fully endorse and support Ghana’s petition for the matter to be discussed at the next African Union (AU) Summit.
Mahama said Africa’s liberation was achieved through unity and solidarity among its people, and warned that the continent should not allow the actions of a small group of intolerant individuals to destroy that legacy.
“We must never permit that proud legacy to be weakened by intolerance by a small group of people,” he said.
The Ghanaian President called on African leaders to work together to end xenophobic attacks and ensure the safety and protection of all African citizens living across the continent.
He expressed hope that the African Union Summit will find lasting solutions to promote peace, unity and coexistence among African nations.
