Hafidh became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman in 2021 when President Samia assumed office following the death of President John Magufuli.

He remained largely away from the political spotlight despite his wife becoming the country’s first female president.

Before taking on the role of First Gentleman, Hafidh was known for his work in agriculture and academia.

Reports describe him as a retired agricultural officer and academic who maintained a relatively private life. His death has drawn condolences from across the region.

Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his condolences to President Samia and the Tanzanian people, saying Kenya stood with its neighbour during the period of mourning.

Hafidh’s death comes as President Samia continues her second term in office, having secured re-election in Tanzania’s 2025 presidential election.

The country now enters a period of mourning as arrangements for the burial of the First Gentleman continue in Zanzibar.
