Namibian Government Introduces Nationwide Livestock Restrictions After Foot and Mouth Disease Case
The Namibian government has introduced immediate nationwide restrictions on the movement and trade of cattle and other cloven-hoofed animals following the confirmation of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in Karasburg, ||Kharas Region.
The restrictions will remain in place until further notice as veterinary authorities work to establish the extent of the outbreak and prevent further spread.
As part of the measures, the movement, marketing and trade of cloven-hoofed animals and their raw products have been suspended across the country. Imports, exports and transit of these animals and products are also prohibited.
Slaughtering of cloven-hoofed animals has been suspended at both local and export abattoirs. It is also prohibited at informal markets and during social events.
Veterinary authorities are increasing surveillance, while roadblocks will be established at strategic locations to monitor and control the movement of livestock and related products.
The restrictions have been introduced under Namibia’s National Foot and Mouth Disease Contingency Plan, which was activated after the disease was confirmed in Karasburg.
The government says the measures are aimed at containing the outbreak and preventing FMD from spreading to other parts of the country.
