33-year-old Woman Defrauded of N$73,000 by Suspected Police Impersonators

A 33-year-old woman from Opuwo in the Kunene Region has reportedly lost N$73,000 after suspected scammers posing as police detectives allegedly threatened her during a phone call.
The incident was reported on Friday at approximately 10:14 at a Bank Windhoek branch, according to the Namibian Police.
It is alleged that the woman received a cellphone call before being connected to a teleconference with two individuals who claimed to be police officers. The suspects reportedly told her that she was under investigation and pressured her into providing the final digits of her bank card.
Following the interaction, N$73,000 was allegedly transferred to First National Bank (FNB) through EasyWallet and Pay-to-Cellphone transactions.
The incident comes just a week after another woman from Okahao in the Omusati Region reportedly lost N$20,320 in a separate cellphone scam. In that case, a fraudster allegedly tricked the victim into revealing her bank card details and One-Time PIN (OTP).
The two incidents highlight the risks posed by scammers who use deception and impersonation to gain access to victims’ money.
