
A late-night altercation at the Okarundu four-way, also known as the Otjikaendu four-way, ended tragically when a taxi driver fatally shot a street vendor on Thursday night.
Eyewitnesses reported that the victim, accompanied by two other men, had been searching for transport when a dispute erupted with the taxi driver. According to accounts from the scene, the driver feared he was about to be robbed and, in panic, fired two shots — one of which struck the vendor at close range, killing him instantly.
The driver allegedly attempted to flee immediately after the incident but later returned to the scene. Members of the public quickly alerted the police, who arrived alongside emergency medical services.
The two men who were with the deceased were taken into police custody, while the driver remained at the scene and was being questioned by investigators.
Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances that led to the shooting. The name of the deceased has not yet been released, as authorities await notification of next of kin.
