Namibia’s leading telecommunications provider, MTC, has taken a major step forward in the digital era by introducing its first-ever eSIM card. The innovation marks a shift away from traditional physical SIM cards, aligning the country with global advancements in mobile technology.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus, said the eSIM represents far more than just a new piece of technology. She described it as a driver of progress and a cornerstone of Namibia’s digital transformation journey.
“Connectivity today is about reimagining convenience,” Theofelus stated. “In an interconnected world, adaptability and seamless access are no longer luxuries but necessities. Whether in education, healthcare, commerce, or governance, digital connectivity underpins every aspect of development.”
She further noted that adopting eSIM technology brings Namibia closer to achieving universal, secure, and streamlined connectivity. Unlike the physical SIM, the embedded SIM is built directly into devices, giving users more control while eliminating the need for plastic cards and long queues.
“This shift is not only practical but also environmentally conscious, reducing plastic waste from SIM card production,” Theofelus added.
MTC’s rollout of the eSIM sets the stage for more flexible and sustainable digital services, positioning Namibia at the forefront of regional telecommunications innovation.
