Police in the Omusati Region have arrested a 46-year-old Angolan man for allegedly dealing in firearms without authorization. The arrest took place in the early hours of Wednesday, 22 October 2025, at around 01:20, along the Epalela Omakuva C46 road to Ruacana in the Ruacana Constituency.
According to Omusati Regional Police Commander, Commissioner Ismael Basson, the suspect was found in possession of five AK-47 assault rifles and five AK-47 magazines at the time of his arrest.
Commissioner Basson said the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by the Namibian Police Force (Nampol) to curb the illegal possession and trafficking of firearms, particularly along the country’s northern borders.
He further revealed that this is not the first incident of its kind in the area. “A similar case was reported last year in the same vicinity, where a 24-year-old man was arrested for being in possession of seven AK-47 rifles,” Basson said.
The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon. Investigations into the origin and intended destination of the weapons are ongoing.
