Namibians to Receive Payments in Local Banks Through PayPal

Namibia is moving closer to a major shift in digital payments, with Selcom Namibia reported to be preparing the rollout of PayPal services that will finally allow Namibians to receive funds directly into local bank accounts.
Selcom is a Pan-African financial and payment services provider, offering comprehensive solutions across digital payments, card and cardless transactions, and payment gateway integration.
According to information shared with The Brief (a trusted source for financial and economic reporting Outlet), Selcom has secured approval from PayPal and Mastercard to enable local PayPal activation. Once implemented, Namibians will be able to open PayPal accounts locally, carry out wallet-to-wallet transfers, and withdraw their earnings straight into domestic bank accounts.
The development is reported to be a significant boost for the country’s growing digital community, including freelancers, creators, SMEs, and online service providers, who have long faced obstacles when receiving international payments.
Before the service goes live, Selcom is reported to be planning consultations with the Bank of Namibia to ensure the rollout meets all regulatory requirements and fits within its current Payment Service Provider (PSP) licence. The company is expected to present its framework and obtain guidance from the central bank.
Selcom is also reported to be in ongoing discussions with PayPal and Mastercard to become PayPal’s official local activator in Namibia. This role would enable both digital wallet transactions and direct bank settlements for users.
In addition to PayPal integration, Selcom has reportedly initiated efforts to bring Apple Pay and Google Pay into the country, a move aimed at modernising the national payment system and aligning Namibia with global standards.
If all regulatory steps are approved, Namibians will soon enjoy smoother access to international earnings and greater inclusion in the global digital economy.
