Real Madrid opened their 2026/27 UEFA Champions League campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday night.

Kylian Mbappé and Federico Valverde scored before half-time to put the Spanish giants in control. Inter responded in the second half through Carlos Augusto, setting up a tense finish.

Real Madrid were forced to withstand considerable pressure as Inter pushed for an equaliser. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois played a crucial role, producing several important saves, including a late stop that helped preserve Madrid’s lead.

The victory gives Real Madrid three points from their opening Champions League fixture, although the performance raised questions after Inter enjoyed long spells of possession and created several opportunities.

For José Mourinho, the result also marked a memorable return to European competition with Real Madrid, coming against Inter, the club he guided to Champions League glory in 2010.

Real Madrid will now turn their attention back to LaLiga, with Rayo Vallecano due to visit the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday, September 12.
