Marriage challenges continue to place a strain on Namibian families, as evidenced by the High Court’s divorce roll today, which saw a total of 111 cases. The Windhoek division registered 67 divorce cases, while the Oshakati division recorded 44.

Experts suggest that several underlying factors contribute to the rising number of marital breakdowns. Pastor Lukas Katenda, speaking to NAMPA, noted that a shortage of experienced pastoral counselors could play a role, as many may not have the training needed to adequately support couples through conflicts.

Katenda further highlighted that common triggers for divorce include insufficient preparation before marriage, unrealistic expectations, and struggles to adapt to the life changes that come with wedlock. He emphasized the importance of pre-marital counseling and ongoing guidance to help couples navigate these challenges.

The figures underline the need for strengthened support systems for married couples, both within communities and through professional counseling services, to reduce the increasing trend of marital dissolution in the country.
