Manchester City Reject Premier League Verdict, saying “disappointed and surprised”
Manchester City have strongly rejected the findings of an independent Premier League commission after the club was found guilty of serious financial rule breaches covering a nine-season period.
The Premier League confirmed on Tuesday that the commission found City guilty of all charges relating to serious breaches of its financial rules between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons, as well as the majority of allegations concerning the club’s cooperation with the league’s investigation.
Manchester City responded by saying they were “disappointed and surprised” by the commission’s opinion.
The club maintained that it remains innocent of the accusations and said it has substantial evidence supporting its position.
“Manchester City FC is both disappointed and surprised by the opinion of the Premier League Commission,” the club said in its statement.
City also made it clear that the verdict will not end their legal fight, confirming that they intend to pursue the available appeal process.
The club said it would remain “relentless” in defending its position and argued that the commission’s opinion contains what it considers to be significant errors involving law, principle and facts.
The long-running case centres on alleged financial breaches between 2009 and 2018. The independent commission concluded that City used commercial arrangements that misrepresented the true agreements, while also finding breaches involving the club’s financial reporting and spending limits.
The commission also found that City breached its duties to cooperate with the Premier League during the investigation.
Despite the verdict, Manchester City continue to deny the allegations. The club said the Premier League process is still ongoing and that it cannot comment fully while further proceedings remain outstanding.
The club has also previously maintained that it had supplied a “comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence” in support of its case.
No final sporting or financial sanction has yet been imposed. The next stages are expected to involve the appeal process and the determination of any punishment arising from the commission’s findings.
Manchester City’s latest response means the dispute, which has been ongoing for years, is set to continue through the next stages of the legal process.
